Surfing the waves of life: Natasha's story
Yet another legendary "Girls Who Can't Surf Good" story

👋 Hey, I am Natasha
If you ever walk along the Scheveningen beach at sunrise, you might spot me—surfboard or kite in hand, hair wild from the wind, grinning at the endless possibility of the ocean. I’m Natasha Smit from the Netherlands and the ocean has always been my second home.
💙 Joy and loss
My love for water runs deep. From a young age, I was drawn to anything that let me move with the elements—surfing, wind surfing, sailing, water polo. The ocean’s energy is pure joy for me. There’s nothing like catching your first wave of the day, feeling the wind pull your kite, or gliding across the water under a wide-open sky. These moments fill me with laughter and lightness, no matter what’s happening on land.
But the ocean has also been my sanctuary in the hardest times. When I lost my mother, it felt like my world went cold. I kept myself busy—playing water polo at a high level, studying, always surrounded by people—but inside, I felt empty and alone, like I didn’t belong anywhere. Sometimes, even in a crowded room, I felt invisible, carrying pain no one else could see.

🏄 Surfing as lifeline
Surfing became my lifeline. When I paddle out, the noise in my head quiets. The rhythm of the waves, the salt on my skin, the simple act of moving with nature—it all helps me reconnect to myself and the world around me. The ocean wraps me up, reminding me that I’m alive, that I can still feel warmth and joy, even after loss.
🧘 Yoga as foundation
Yoga, though, is the foundation that holds it all together. Yoga taught me to breathe through the tough moments, to listen to my body, and to find presence—on the mat, on the board, and in everyday life. It grounds me and gives me the strength to ride life’s waves, both big and small. Yoga is where I return to center, and it’s what inspired me to help others find their own balance.

🏕️ Creating Tasha’s Surfcamp
That’s why I created Tasha’s Surfcamp. Ten years ago, I started this journey with a simple goal: to share the healing, joy, and connection I found in the water with others. At Tasha’s Surfcamp, it’s not about being the best or chasing perfection. It’s about fun, growth, and being truly present. We keep our groups small so everyone feels seen and supported. I’ve been that person who felt out of place, and I know how powerful it is to find your tribe—people who celebrate your wins, pick you up after wipeouts, and share your laughter.
Through Tasha’s Surfcamp, I blend everything I love—surfing, kitesurfing, sailing, yoga, and coaching—into an experience that’s about so much more than just learning a sport. My program, Surfing the Waves of Life, was born from my own healing journey. I wanted to create a space where people could let go, reconnect, and rediscover their inner spark—just like I did. Whether you’re looking for adventure, healing, or simply a place to belong, you’ll find it here.

Whenever life gets tough, I still turn to the ocean and the mat. They remind me that I’m never truly alone, and that every wave—no matter how daunting—can be ridden with courage, presence, and joy.
If you’re feeling out of balance, disconnected, or just curious about what’s possible, I’d love to welcome you. The ocean, the wind, and the mat are waiting—and so am I, ready to share the joy and healing that changed my life.
