Surfing the waves of life: Natasha's story
Yet another legendary "Girls Who Can't Surf Good" story

š Hey, I am Natasha
If you ever walk along the Scheveningen beach at sunrise, you might spot meāsurfboard or kite in hand, hair wild from the wind, grinning at the endless possibility of the ocean. Iām Natasha Smit from the Netherlands and the ocean has always been my second home.
š Joy and loss
My love for water runs deep. From a young age, I was drawn to anything that let me move with the elementsāsurfing, wind surfing, sailing, water polo. The oceanās energy is pure joy for me. Thereās nothing like catching your first wave of the day, feeling the wind pull your kite, or gliding across the water under a wide-open sky. These moments fill me with laughter and lightness, no matter whatās happening on land.
But the ocean has also been my sanctuary in the hardest times. When I lost my mother, it felt like my world went cold. I kept myself busyāplaying water polo at a high level, studying, always surrounded by peopleābut inside, I felt empty and alone, like I didnāt belong anywhere. Sometimes, even in a crowded room, I felt invisible, carrying pain no one else could see.

š Surfing as lifeline
Surfing became my lifeline. When I paddle out, the noise in my head quiets. The rhythm of the waves, the salt on my skin, the simple act of moving with natureāit all helps me reconnect to myself and the world around me. The ocean wraps me up, reminding me that Iām alive, that I can still feel warmth and joy, even after loss.
š§ Yoga as foundation
Yoga, though, is the foundation that holds it all together. Yoga taught me to breathe through the tough moments, to listen to my body, and to find presenceāon the mat, on the board, and in everyday life. It grounds me and gives me the strength to ride lifeās waves, both big and small. Yoga is where I return to center, and itās what inspired me to help others find their own balance.

šļø Creating Tashaās Surfcamp
Thatās why I created Tashaās Surfcamp. Ten years ago, I started this journey with a simple goal: to share the healing, joy, and connection I found in the water with others. At Tashaās Surfcamp, itās not about being the best or chasing perfection. Itās about fun, growth, and being truly present. We keep our groups small so everyone feels seen and supported. Iāve been that person who felt out of place, and I know how powerful it is to find your tribeāpeople who celebrate your wins, pick you up after wipeouts, and share your laughter.
Through Tashaās Surfcamp, I blend everything I loveāsurfing, kitesurfing, sailing, yoga, and coachingāinto an experience thatās about so much more than just learning a sport. My program, Surfing the Waves of Life, was born from my own healing journey. I wanted to create a space where people could let go, reconnect, and rediscover their inner sparkājust like I did. Whether youāre looking for adventure, healing, or simply a place to belong, youāll find it here.

Whenever life gets tough, I still turn to the ocean and the mat. They remind me that Iām never truly alone, and that every waveāno matter how dauntingācan be ridden with courage, presence, and joy.
If youāre feeling out of balance, disconnected, or just curious about whatās possible, Iād love to welcome you. The ocean, the wind, and the mat are waitingāand so am I, ready to share the joy and healing that changed my life.
